Shuck, Unwin named Teachers of the Year
Seiling Public Schools announced their Teacher of the Year winners prior to the Christmas break with a pair of long-time educators taking honors.
Claire Shuck was chosen as the Secondary Teacher of the Year while Vanessa Unwin took Elementary Teacher of the Year recognition.
Shuck is a 40-year teaching veteran after beginning her education time at Seiling as a Title 1 instructor and math tutor during the 1978-79 school year. Since that first year she has been a Physical Education teacher while also coaching girls’ basketball and track over the last four decades.
“They probably thought they better pick her before she retires,” Shuck joked of garnering the prestigious honor for the first time. “I was kind of surprised to find out they selected me but it’s a good way to probably end a career.
“I’m not leaving yet though. I plan on being back again next year.”
A lot has changed during her 40 years at Seiling Schools, including building changes but points to the upcoming opening of the new school as obviously one of the biggest changes.
