Cavett Camps – Where illness doesn’t define the child
With the proven slogan “Where illness does not define the child”, children who face medical struggles have a place where they can feel like they belong, thanks to the work of Canton native Danny Cavett.
Cavett Kids Foundation is an organization created by Cavett that hosts camps for children with a variety of medical ailments. A labor of love, Cavett saw the need for a place where children could go, have fun and learn that medical problems do not have to define them.
The Foundation was born from Cavett’s dream to help children facing debilitating and life-threatening illnesses. The Director of Pastoral Care at OU Medical Center, he built the organization over a period of many years.
With his Master’s degree in Sociology, with a thesis on families with chronically ill children, Cavett originally wanted to be a chaplain in the military. After receiving his undergraduate from Midwest Christian College, he got married and decided that being a chaplain in the military might not be right for him after all. Instead, he entered into Youth Ministry, which then led to full-time Head Ministry.
Cavett did that for 10 years in a couple of different churches before receiving a call from Children’s Hospital to be a chaplain there. He reported that after praying about it, he accepted the opportunity and began that in January of 1977.
